Katarina Witt began to ice skate as early as age 5 years. The talent she displayed soon became apparent and she was accepted to a special school for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The school was where she was introduced to Jutta Muller in this school. Witt placed second in the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. It was her first appearance. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt captured the eyes of everyone and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic success Katarina Wit was awarded gold medals in ice skating for women during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a fiercely competitive competition. After four years, her win, she managed to take home an even tighter race. Free skaters lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figure that was compulsory as well as the short program. Witt is the only female figure skater who has won this event two times in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the world of film and television as an actor, returned for figure skating, competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Despite not winning an award for gold, the young skater was a hit with the spectators. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
